Saturday 14th March 2009 - Multiple Long Exposure Images and Conversion to HDR

It seems that "some" people don't seem to understand that by shooting long exposure images that you can pull out colours in the sky and other elements of the subject being shot that you normally wouldn't get from a standard exposure, so in order to show this I've uploaded the multiple long exposures from two recent HDR's I've produced to show exactly what is captured by the camera and how these relate to the final HDR image:-
Example 1 - Single Building in the pedestrian area of Leuven, Belgium
Image 1 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 10 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 2 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 5 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 3 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 2.5 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 4 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 1.6 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 5 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 1 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 6 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 1/2 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 7 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 1/6 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 8 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 1/25 second exposure, ISO-160

...and then by using Photomatix I used the 8 long exposures above to create a single HDR image which was then tone mapped using very minimal settings (75% strength, 45% colour saturation, light smoothing medium, luminosity 8, white point 1.1, black point 4.2, gamma 1.0).
Here's the final HDR image:-

Example 2 - Where 3 small roads combine & associated buildings in the pedestrian area of Leuven, Belgium
Image 1 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 7 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 2 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 3 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 3 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 1.6 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 4 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 0.77 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 5 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 1/4 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 6 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 1/13 second exposure, ISO-160

Image 7 - shot at 14mm, F/3.5, 1/30 second exposure, ISO-160

...and then by using Photomatix I used the 8 long exposures above to create a single HDR image which was then tone mapped using very minimal settings (77% strength, 43% colour saturation, light smoothing medium, luminosity 9, white point 1.2, black point 4.1, gamma 1.0).
Here's the final HDR image:-

When I get some free time I'll go into a bit more detail about how to create the HDR images themselves, but for now that's all...
