Event: Club GTI Trackday, Kirkiston Racetrack, Northern Ireland

Date: Sat 11th June 2005

This Saturday past played Kirkiston Racetrack played host to members of Club GTI’s Northern Ireland region, and allowed them the chance to show off their track skills or just have great fun taking their car around a racetrack as well as using the back straight for some timed drag racing.  For anyone that doesn’t know who Club GTI are they are primarily a VW enthusiasts club which was formed way back in 1987, and since then their membership in the UK and Ireland just continues to grow.  Being a part of their club grants you access to several trackdays, shows and regional get-togethers throughout the year.  More info can be found on their website – www.clubgti.com.

 To start off the day the track was opened up and the members in attendance were let loose a number of cars at a time at controlled intervals to run several laps of the track.  From running flat out on the main and back straights to the fun of swinging right and left through the chicane everyone seemed to be having great fun and as each lap went by more and more confidence in their cars and own ability made for even more fun as they went faster and faster.

As lunchtime came, it was time to get the cars looking to drag race onto the bottom of the back straight where they would run one at a time against the clock.  With the drag racing taking place on the back straight it made it easy for all the spectators in attendance to get a great view of the whole quarter mile being used.

After the drag racing was finished a short break and then back on with the trackday action as the groups of cars were once again let loose onto Kirkistons curves.  The confidence of some of the drivers on the day was all too clear to see with several cars taking corners on 3 wheels and a couple of harmless spins due to taking too much momentum into the corners.

A truly great day out, and I would thoroughly recommend anyone looking to get their car out on track to get in touch with their regional club GTI team, as these events are always professionally run.
